San Antonio’s bio-medical industry exceeds $14 billion in annual direct economic impact and accounts for over 110,000 jobs, including 10,000 scientists. San Antonio also has a proud and distinguished performance record with sensitive government projects and the medical community.

San Antonio has the requisite combination of resources, expertise, infrastructure, workforce and community support critical to the success of NBAF. San Antonio is home to multiple BSL-3 laboratories and the nation’s only privately owned BSL-4 laboratory. The depth of experience and expertise in high levels of bio-containment research are unparalleled in the United States.

San Antonio’s biomedical community currently collaborates with the military, homeland security, and the academic community. Moreover, the governments and citizens of the City of San Antonio and Bexar County have strongly supported existing bio-containment laboratories. For example, the South Texas Medical Center, the largest medical research and care provider in South Texas, is a conglomerate of numerous major hospitals, clinics, and research facilities. The Center is responsible for a $12 billion dollar biomedical industry and employs around 27,000 people with a total operating budget of $2.5 billion dollars.
